*The history of amateur boxing in British Columbia is complete with drama, tragedy, comedy
and fun. Some of that history can be told through the stories of our first 15 inductees. For real action and history in the Sixties we have the likes of Dick Findlay, Frank Scott, Fred Desrosiers, Freddy Fuller
and in the early Sixties and fifties we have Harold Mann. But the story continue with the
ten additions in 2011 from Alan Brown and the pioneer of boxing Tommy Paonessa. But then there is the Campbell River Eagles Boxing Club which is the oldest club on Vancouver Island or who could forget the 1967 Diamond Belt tournament that featured DAVE WYLIE and FREDDY FULLER in the finals with Wylie winning the Diamond Boy award.
Take a trip back to the 1948 to 1952 and two names of interest are EDDIE HADDAD and LENNIE WALTERS, but the Walters name would continue into the Eighties with the likes of DALE WALTERS. Some of our great boxers would etend their involvement in boxing such as LINDY LINDMOSER who would be a coach with the Firefighters in the early Seventies, and also serve as an official and a glover at tournaments and would be one of the volunteers iat the 1984 Junior Nationals held in Burnaby.
Some of our greats tend to be overlooked because their main base of operation was not in the Greater Vancouver region. A case in point is 2010 inductee as a builder RICK BROUGH
who served as the Island Commissioner from 1979 to the mid-eighties, but came back to be one of the early volunteers for the preparation of the 1994 Commonwealth Games held in the Greater Victoria area of Vancouver Island. Along the way there would be other names that would be recognized such as coaches ELIO IUS and PAT O'REILLY. Of interest both would have some influence over the history of the ASTORIA BOXING CLUB that began in 1966.
But others that were coaches and officials and directors are remembered such as
the late FRED FULLER and in 2011 we picked TOMMY PAONESSA as the first in
the Pioneer category and who could forget the likes of CHRIS IUS, MANNY SOBRAL
and GEORGE ANGELOMATIS.
